Environmental Charter High School Named One of Three So Cal Green Ribbon Schools
Our client Environmental Charter High School, wins the first ever national Green Ribbon Schools award. It was one of three in Southern California, and one of 78 schools nationwide to win top honors in environmental and sustainability education.
The Green Ribbon Schools have three pillars of sustainabilty: Pillar one: Net zero environmental impact which includes, reduced or eliminated green house gas emissions, improved water quality, efficiency, and conservation, reduced waste production, use of alternative transportation to, during, and from school; Pillar Two: The school improves the health and performance of the students and staff by creating an integrated school environment health program and high standards of nutrition, fitness, and quantity of quality outdoor time; and Pillar Three: 100% of the school's graduates are environmentally and sustainability literate through interdisciplinary learning about the key relationships between dynamic environmental, energy and human systems, use of the environment and sustainability to develop STEM content, knowldege, and thinking skills, lastly by the development and application of civic engagement knowledge and skills.
We were happy to see on the White House's announcement that they emphasize "schools that use green roofs, pervious pavement, rain gardens, rain barrels, rain cisterns and low-flow water equipment of all types," we know that the landscape is an important part of a whole system that creates true sustainability, from the classroom to the utility bills. Congratulations ECS!
