Arlington Gardens 5th Anniversay

Our labor of love for a couple of years now, Arlington Garden, once a 3 acre empty lot, now turned garden with orange orchard is celebrating it's 5th anniversary, Saturday, May 8, 2010. You can purchase a jar of 2010 Washington Navel Sweet Orange Marmalade, from oranges grown at the Garden. South Pasadena Girl Scouts helped Betty & Charles pick 200 lbs. of "just ripe" oranges, and E. Waldo Ward in Sierra Madre converted it into jars of golden spread for your morning toast.

Touch the Water: A River Play

La Loma would like to recommend, Touch the Water: A River Play, from May 28-June 21, 2009, Wednesdays-Sundays at 8pm. Performed along the bank of the Los Angeles River at the Rio de Los Angeles State Park - Bowtie Parcel entrance adjacent to 2800 Casitas Ave, LA 90039.

"Under the City of Angels runs a fierce river flowing from the mountains to the ocean. But do you know it’s there? Once an unpredictable and mighty stream, a bountiful life source subject to raging floods, the Los Angeles River has lived under a shroud of concrete for the past fifty years. Today, having been tamed and transformed into an industrial flood channel, the river is at the center of much debate. What happens when we change Nature? Should we free the river from her concrete corset and let Angelenos finally touch the water?"

Arlington Gardens Parkway Volunteer Project

More than thirty eagle scouts and their fathers came out to work with La Loma Development and Arlington Gardens to help create a new water catchment along the parkway. Originally the trees along the road were packed in flat dirt, and much of the water was running off into the street. The new parkway would help with retaining the water (especially important due to drought in Southern California), as well as improve the look of the community by creating a natural looking arroyo along the parks edge.
